Soulja Boy

"Crank That (Soulja Boy)" is the hit debut single by rapper Soulja Boy from his debut album Souljaboytellem.com. It spent seven weeks at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 2007. The song is easily recognized with its steel pan melody. Soulja Boy performed the song on TRL and 106 & Park on August 27, 2007. He also performed it on the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards at Kanye West's Good Life Party.
The song is on Now That's What I Call Music! 26. This song was #21 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007.[2] This song was also the #1 music video on BET's Top 100 music videos of 2007. The song received a nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Rap Song for the 50th Grammy Awards.
The video begins in the "ColliPark Residence" with two children imitating the Soulja Boy dance. Mr. Collipark takes a keen interest in the children's movements, leading him to contact Soulja Boy in an attempt to sign him up to "Collipark Records". His instinct is confirmed when, he notices a number of people popularising the dance, en route to meeting with Soulja Boy. This video was premiered on BET's 106 & Park on August 9, 2007. The music video features Bow Wow, Omarion, Unk, Baby D, Jibbs, Rich Boy, Arab and several dancers doing the signature "Soulja Boy Dance."
There are various remixes of this song, which include artists such as Lil' Wayne, Twista[3], Jermaine Dupri and Short Dawg[4], Jae Millz[5], and Tone-Tone . There is also an official remix, "Travis Barker Remix" also known as the "Rock Remix" which adds live drums and guitars. Alvin and the Chipmunks did a remix of this song as a promotion for their new movie. Other remixes include "Crank Dat Aqua Man", "Crank Dat Spiderman", & "Crank That Kosha Boy", among others. Surprisingly, one of the supposed "remixes" to the song, "Crank Dat Batman", has become the first official single to Pop It Off Boyz's new album and the song has it's own video that aired as "Jam Of The Week" on MTV Jams and also got airplay on other music channels and stations.
The song reached the summit of the Hot 100 on September 15, 2007, where it stayed for two weeks before it was replaced by "Stronger" by Kanye West. It replaced the song again on October 6, 2007, staying at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for another five weeks, making it a number one-single for a total of seven weeks. It has stayed in the top 10 for a long time and got into the top 5 again the week after Christmas. Through radio airplay on several stations that occasionally play hip-hop, the song charted at number 85 on Mediabase's Alternative Rock chart. [6]
The song is also achieving international success; so far, it has peaked at number two on the Top 40 Singles Chart in New Zealand. [7] In the UK the song managed to debut at #53 on the UK Singles Chart on downloads alone, and since has moved up to #3 on downloads alone. The track was released physically in the UK on December 17th, and peaked at #2. [8]
